Old Deer Abbey
Founded in 1219 by William Comyn, Earl of Buchan (the abbey is became
his resting place when he died in 1233). The Abbey absorbed the existing
Clerici when they moved from Kinloss Abbey. The monks where of the
Cistercian order, who believed in austerity which is reflected in
the building style. The site has a long history and has been linked
with St. Columba and St. Drostan and founded a monastry here, but
no records survive of this other than Medieval traditions. The site
is also made famous by the Book of Deer one of the most important
manuscripts for Scottish imagery and language that exists today.
